So let's talk about letters to the editor. I believe that in order to be appropriate a letter to an editor has to sound educated. I don't necessarily believe in formatting rules, but hey, that's just how it is. What is important is to know what you are talking about, and be able to back up your statements in a way that is clear. If you are arguing a point, it is important to have evidence in order to be taken seriously. And that is final!
I'm very disappointed in this assignment on letters to the editor, yet at the same time I am grateful to learn how to create an annotated bibliography. 8 am classes make me want to cry :'(

Diversity at WMU
On the Western Michigan official website I have found the "Mission and Goals" of our wonderful university. I haven't read it yet, because I want to say what I feel about diversity here before being educated on what the school has to say. After that I will read the Mission and Goals, and write whether my opinion has changed.
Before reading the Mission and Goals
I am on the same side as Linda Chavez, where I question the sincerity schools, especially universities have when it comes to promoting multiculturalism. In my opinion multiculturalism and diversity is promoted within Universities to make that school more popular, and to therefore bring in money. But it is my personality to question those who are in authority, and especially question major institutions such as universities for their intent. I'm afraid that too many school systems are based off of capitalism.
After reading the Mission and Goals
One point made in the missions part was to "Incorporates participation from diverse individuals in decision-making" which is a point that I do like. I find it very important to have people from across the nation and world come together to solve problems. If only people who agreed on everything because they were from the same place made all the decisions nothing would change.
Then there was a point in the goals section: "To increase diversity within the student body, faculty, and staff through institutional practices and programs" and the first question that popped in my head of course was why? and how would institutional practices and programs make the student body faculty and staff more diverse?
Solely based on the Mission and Goals of the school I accept its desire for a multicultural campus as a positive one. It is actually one of the reasons why I chose this school to begin with. But there's always room to question ;)
